A checklist for decision makers

Before making a referal for an IMCA, the following questions will be useful

  • Does the person concerned lack capacity to make this decision?
  •
  • Is there no family or friend who is available and appropriate to support or represent them in the consultation?
  •
  • Does the decision concern either serious medical intervention, or moving their place of residence?
  •
  • Has this person previously named someone to be involved in decisions on their behalf?
  •
  • Have they made a lasting Power of Attorney or an Enduring Power of Attorney beyond property and financial affairs?
  •
  • Has a Deputy been appointed from the Court of Protection to be involved in decisions outside property and their financial affairs?
  •
